Cities are becoming more and more polluted. There are measures regular people can take to help reduce the amount of pollution in cities. Cities all over the United States are affected by many of the same pollutants.
Cities are affect by particle pollution which consist of fine dust, smoke, shoot, and small particles from chemical reactions are in the air. Burning oil and coal are also classified as particle pollutants. Nitrogen oxide from cars and buses, electric generators, and particles from road work all emit small particles into the air. Since these particles are some small they can get into the deep tissue in the lungs. This pollution can aggravate asthma, and lead to respiratory problems. Visibility when driving is also decreased due to these pollutants. These pollutants have also affected national parks. Particles in the air have reduced visibility by seventy percent.
Many cities are affected by ground level ozone which is mainly smog. Smog is caused by chemical released from cars, manufacturing plants, and factories. These cooperates release volatile organics compounds and nitrogen oxides into the air. Smog can cause respiratory problems even in healthy people. The risk for respiratory infections in increased in the summer when the ozone levels reach their highest point. Smog can literally be seen hovering above the ground especially in the summertime.
There are other pollutant that affect the quality of air in cities. Carbon Monoxide is a dangerous threat along with sulfur oxides and even lead. Carbon Monoxide is odorless but dangerous. Over exposure to this gas can cause death. Sulfur oxide is emitted mainly though fossil fuel power plants and other factories including those that work with metal ore. All these pollutants that are commonly found in cities affect the lungs . In order to save the air the amount of pollutants found in cities has to greatly reduce.
