National Achievers Society

Each year the Urban League of Champaign County acknowledges the academic performance of African-American students with a "B" or higher grade point average.  These students are inducted into the National Achievers Society (NAS) and provided with academic and cultural opportunities throughout the year.

Senior Celebration

The Urban League of Champaign County host an Annual Rites of Passage Ceremony honoring graduating seniors.

Finals Fiesta

Twice a year during high school finals, the Urban League of Champaign County and community volunteers provide snacks and words of support to our youth at each local high school.

  • NAAPID (National African American Parent Involvement Day)

On the second Monday of February, the Urban League of Champaign County facilitates a community wide family involvement day geared towards encouraging and increasing the participation of African American parents in the educational process of their children.

Due to the Champaign County's 2007 school calendar year, NAAPID will be held on the third Monday of February.  NAAPID poster

  • MLK "A Day On, Not A Day Off" (Learn and Serve Project)

There were 26 youth participants that made gift baskets for 31 senior residence.  The gift baskets consisted of items such as tissue, toothpaste, Boost Energy Drinks, amongst other things, were given to all senior participants and delivered to the non-ambulatory residence.  In addition, the youth learned to play Rummy 500, chess and Pitty Pat, while the elders learned UNO and Mancala.  Dance lessons included the youth teaching the Chicago Cha Cha Slide and the elders teaching the Two Step or "Bopping".  However the highlight of the day, was a fierce competition of BINGO and story telling.  MLK Project 

  • Freedom School Summer Program

Freedom School was built around the concept of Freedom Schools of 1964, the Urban League of Champaign County in partnership with the Children's Defense Fund will host its third summer freedom school.  The mission is to encourage and motivate African American and Latino children to develop a love and enjoyment for reading and to encourage activism among college aged youth from the local community. 

FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES
Once a month, parents of youth involved in Teen REACH after school program attend family meetings.  Program information is distributed and input about the program is obtained from the families.  Each meeting has an educational component as well.  FANS (Families Accessing Networks and Supports) are available to provide  families with support, information and skills to effectively partner with schools, legal entities, and social services agencies  that serve families.  Meetings are conducted in English and Spanish.
